Comprising over 17,000 islands, Indonesia is one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet and home to about 23% of the world’s mangrove forests, and 135 threatened mammal species, including the Sumatran Tiger, Orangutans, the Javan Rhinoceros and Sumatran Elephants.

Indonesia has lost over 40% of its mangrove forests, and vast swathes of rainforest mostly to the ever expanding Palm Oil industry. The mass destruction of forests, threatens indiginous communities, animals, ecosystems and, almost unbelievably, makes Indonesia the world's largest forest-based emitter of greenhouse gases.

Villagers on Biak Island had already begun a small scale local replanting project, which is where our partner Eden Reforestation Projects was able to help expand and develop multiple projects throughout the villages, and boost the planting and protection of these unique and vital forest systems.  In the first year alone the local workforce planted a whopping 1.7 Million trees. 

 

By mid 2020 projects have expanded across several islands and include agroforestry trees to help with food stability. More than 10 Million trees have been planted so far.
